Eco systems

1.       Can nature and humanity flourish simultaneously?
Sadly, I believe that is it not possible for both humanity and nature to flourish together. This is because of human’s natural behaviour. We are naturally greedy selfish people, we use nature to get ahead of ourselves and develop in a positive way, without thinking of the effect on nature. We only look at our own kind when making decisions and if we do look at other species it is only when they are already in danger.  I do believe however that if humans left the earth, the work would run smoothly, it is just because of our natural instincts of life that the world is being harmed every day.

FOOD LABEL WORK SHEET

I chose Abil  Hartman To be my parter in this project: questions: //www.fda.gov/Food/LabelingNutrition/ConsumerInformatio/ucm078889.htm#see1

Pick up a food product that has a food label from the front of the room. With the assistance of the internet food label guide, answer the following questions on your food’s label. These questions should give you a good idea of the nutritional value of your food.

My food product is ROCKY strawberry, biscuit sticks.

1. What is the serving size?  38g
2. How many servings per container?  One serving in a box.
3. How many calories per serving?  190 calories
4. How many calories are from fat?  20.9 calories
5. What percentage of each serving’s calories comes from fat? My serving size is the same as total calories, thus it is once again 11% of fat.

6. What is the total fat percentage of your food? 11% this is high because this is more than 10% of your daily allowence, for one product which is only a snack.

7. What is the saturated fat percentage in your food?  It does not say, I am assuring it is 0%
Is this content Low/High? -
8. How much of your diet should come from saturated fats?

9. What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats? Satured has  Low density cholesterol which is dangerous for ones health, while unsaturated fats undo the damages of saturated fats.

10. What is the percentage cholesterol in your food? 0%, this is low.
11. How much sodium is in your food? none, this is low
12. What is the carbohydrate content of your food? 27g (9%) It is pretty high because it is a small snack item yet holds around 10% of total carbohydrate value.

13.What is the sugar content of your food? there is not a percentage but we can speculate that the sugar value is high.

14. Why are sugars not good for you? It causes high blood pressure.

15. How much fiber is in your food?  1g
16.Why is fiber good for you? It clears out your digestive systemn by unclogging the junk in it you do not need.
17. How much protein is in your food?  3g (6%) This is a moderate amount.

18. What is the Vitamin A , Vitamin C, Calcium, and Iron content of your food?
Vit. A= 12 IU
Vit. C= 0.3mg
Calcium= 4%
Iron= 4%
Are these amounts adequate? yes they are not high percentages.

19. Overall, what would you say is the nutritional value of your food? Is it good for you? Why or why not? I think it is not good for you, because the amount of carbohydrates and other forms of nutrition in relation to your daily value allowence is too high for a snack.  This food does not give you enough energy in comparision to other foods.

Nutrition Analysis - OPTION 2 – Fit Day

Nutrition Analysis- Normal School day (week day)

Nutrition Analysis- Weekend day (non school day)

ANALYSIS OF BOTH DAYS

how did you do with your eating and activity?
I have to say that I am little concerned with my eating and activity levels. Although I was sure I ate a good amount and a balanced diet I am not consuming more energy than I use. This worries me because it means my body does not get enough food for it to be in the best possible ability for my activities. On the other hand I have a very good activity and food level in itself, meaning I do a lot of sport which keeps me active and healthy.
On the weekend it is normally the time I feast on food. I find that I am so busy during the week, that when I am not busy I am bored and thus feel compelled to eat. But from the Calorie balance I can see that is till do need eat more calories than I burn a day.

How did you do with nutrients (including fats)?
On a week day I tend to eat a lot of carbohydrates throughout the day but weirdly not a lot of protein. This is not a good sign because for the amount of activity I do I need to create a lot of tissue, thus need to be eating more protein. Apart from that my fat levels in my diet are not very high, it is only my protein that needs concerning over.
On the weekend I have a more evenly spread intake of food groups. I eat more protein and less carbohydrates, which is a positive outcome. The only thing I am abit un happy about is my fat intake, because I nibbles on a lot of sweet things on the weekend, bringing my fat intake percentage much higher.

Can you identify any irregularities you might have (too high or too low)
On the week day I have a high intake of Carbs, VitaminB-6, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin C, Iron, Manga, Niacin, Ribofl, Selenium, and Thiamin. I am not to concerned with the Iron intake because I need a lot of iron for swimming, the carbs intake is a concern on the other hand. I also have a very low intake of Calcium, Vitamin E, and Vitamin D, which I need to change.

On the weekend I have a high intake of protein, B-12 and Selenium, which is past the maximum allowance intake of 100mg. I find that surprizing because I did not thing my protein levels were high.  And the same low intakes as a week day, which is even more concerning because I need to get more of these at some time, and I am not.

Assignment- Depression, Stress, Suicide News articles

Bullying leads to Suicide

Teen Commits Suicide Due to Bullying: Parents Sue School for Son's Death. By: Susan Donaldson James.

Source: ABC news, online article : http://abcnews.go.com/Health/MindMoodNews/story?id=7228335

Date : April 2, 2009

Summary:

This Article is about Eric Mohat, a school boy who committed suicide at the age of 17. He was bullied continuously throughout his school years, being called names (such as “queer”, “gay” and other words) in front of his peers and school teachers, because of the after school activities he chose to take part in. The pressure and depression he was in became too great and one day took the advice of one of the boys at school and shot himself. The parents of the boy sued the school, not for compensation for their lose, but for an anti-bullying system to be place in the school.

The Big picture:

There are many suicidal and depression cases from school bullying today. If you look at the big picture from this news article, it not only expresses the seriousness of name calling at schools, but also the importance of an educational system, and an anti-bullying system, educating students in this growing and largely important problem they see happening every day. Naturally students feel the need to tease and pick on students that are ‘weaker than them’. Without an educational system in place some of these children will have no idea the level of seriousness of the problems they are causing. The responsibility of stopping bullying is not only one that the students should have to deal with, but the responsible adults in the situation should the responsibility as well.

The personal meaning:

For me this article really shows the seriousness of the problems I am faced at most days at school. As a student at any school you witness bullying many times in your educational program but never really think that a few words can so greatly harm someone that they will take their own life. I also find it very interesting that teachers do not get involved with bullying situation they see around them. I have been in a few situations where teachers are subconsciously telling their students that “nerds” are meant to be teased or picked on. This article really gives me the knowledge and confidence that next time I am in a situation of bullying I will be more pressured into reporting it or stopping it.

Homework- Assignment- Health Interview

Person Interviewing: My cousin, Jason Thompson, 27 years old.

1. Have you always been as healthy as you are now? Please explain.

No, when I was younger I used to go out and drink a lot, but not that I have settled down, with a baby and a family I am more responsible, and watch my health further.

2. What particular health habits in the following areas do you practice, that contribute to your level of health?

Nutritional Habits: I eat a balanced diet, but am a vegetarian. I supplement meat with nuts and beans so I still get a large range of food groups.

Fitness Habits: I work late hours and so exercise is a problem for me. I try and go to the gym three times a week in the mornings before work though.

Coping with Stress I definitely need work in this area.

Dealing with Conflicts I like to be Switzerland (not only because I live there) because I don’t like putting myself into conflicts. I am able to come to a compromise though, which I find is the best way to deal with any problem.

Keeping a Positive Attitude: I have a wife and a baby that I love with all my heart, thus keeping a positive attitude about life is easy for me.

Any Additional Healthy Habits: I try and take a holiday from work at least one every two weeks, so that I can take a rest and revitalize.

3. How did you develop these habits?

It takes some planning and a whole lot of determination. It is not easy to keep up a program, and eat healthily (I would much rather order take outs that cook a healthy meal) but if it is important enough for you, it is easy to change your life around and get into a cycle.

4. What motivates you to practice a healthy lifestyle?
My baby back home, I want to be the best father I can be.

5. Create a question of your own that you would like to ask regarding this person’s healthy lifestyle. Make sure that the question allows your interviewee to expand on his/her thoughts (not a one word answer).

Question: What made you decide to change your life around and became healthy?

Answer: I looked at myself one day, really deeply, and decided I didn’t like the person I was. It is much easier to change the inside of you if the outside appearance is healthy as well.
